eSports' Console Side: Playstation 4 Taking Over?

During the mid-2000s, Xbox certainly had the competitive gamers' love when it came to competition for a few reasons. Microsoft had put together something more interesting in terms of platform for competition with Xbox Live and Playstation's offer was viewed more as a watered-down alternative. However, during the past few years we've seen a major shift occur for sure – at the recent E3 events, Sony won some major points to gain the confidence of gamers, especially hardcore ones, and we're now seeing a shift in how the consoles are perceived.

For sure, the Playstation 4 is currently the coolest console to own because of its superior image after the always-online and used games stumbles from Microsoft, and right now there seems to be little stopping Sony's console from becoming the next main platform for competitions both online and offline.

And the reason for that could be as simple as this – competing is more fun when there are more people playing, and playing the same thing, and the PS4 is where it's going to be at for the years to come. There's always an opinion among hardcore gamers that newbies aren't welcomed or don't help a competitive scene grow, but I think that it's far from the truth. The big interest in the PS4 will only bring that platform to new heights in terms of competition and I think the skilled gamers on there have been waiting for a long while for that to happen.

Around the time the Call of Duty scene was playing the Black Ops edition of the game, competitive players had to make a tough choice around the MLG circuit because while most good players were on Xbox 360, the Pro Circuit was announced to be exclusively on Playstation 3 with the big money.

This lead to some Xbox teams making the switch while some purists decided to keep it around Gamesbattles and other LAN events. Generally speaking, the teams that shifted from Xbox to PS3 did about as well as the team that were already playing on PS3, so the switch shouldn't be that intimidating for anyone.

Sure, I think the Xbox controller is better all around, but fortunately the grip and feel on the Playstation 4 controller is a bit better than its predecessor. It's hard to break up some old habits, but unless the current console generation is really short (which I doubt), the PS4 is going to be where it's at. If you're looking to stay strictly on Xbox One, fortunately there will still be some attractive franchises in the likes of Titanfall and Forza Motorsports to keep some good competition on there, but get ready for a major shift still.

Overall, I think that this is good news, simply because I thought there was a disbalance in how the players and prize money were distributed around the two consoles, but with the advantage in numbers Xbox have had in recent years, I think it is only fair that Playstation gets some growth. Maybe in fact this will only result in two platforms that are about equal in terms of player count and money. The next step would probably be to see some cross-platform play in some shape or form during this generation, but I'm probably just dreaming when it comes to that.
